CARDINAL RECRUITING PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Cardinal
Recruiting Program provides students with an opportunity
to interview with employers during the fall, winter, and spring
quarters. Most fall interviews are for full-time, regular positions
for graduating students, winter interviews are typically for intern
and summer positions.
You should update your Cardinal
Careers profile annually so that it accurately reflects your graduation
date and only lists the degrees which you are CURRENTLY pursuing.
To participate in Cardinal Recruiting you
must have a Cardinal
Careers account. Once you
have created your Cardinal Careers account, you retain the same
account during your time as a Stanford student and as an alum.
- You
are eligible to participate in Cardinal Recruiting if you are
a student currently enrolled at Stanford University and taking
classes at the University. You must be on-campus during the recruiting
season when submitting resumes via the Cardinal Recruiting system.
If you are abroad and wish to submit to a Cardinal Recruiting
opportunity, contact the employer and explain your situation.
- The criteria used in
determining if you are eligible for interviews are degree,
major,
graduation
date
range and, if applicable, work authorization.
- Cardinal
Recruiting "Intent
to Participate Form"
To activate Cardinal
Recruiting, log-in to your Cardinal Careers account, you will
see an "Activate Cardinal Recruiting" link
on the left side of your Cardinal Careers homepage. Click the
link and complete the 'Intent to Participate' form.
- The
Cardinal Recruiting Intent to Participate form can only be submitted
once for each academic
year. If
you try to submit the Intent form twice during the academic
year, you will get an error message.
- Once
you fill out the Intent form, we will activate your
account within two business days. Once activated,
the INTERVIEWS button on your Cardinal
Careers account will be active.
- Participation in Cardinal
Recruiting will enable you to view information
on participating employers as well as job and internship descriptions,
submit resumes and cover letters, and sign up for interviews online.
- Resume submissions
commence at 12:01 am Pacific Time on the start date and end
at 11:59 pm Pacific Time on the final date.

Program Policies
As
a candidate you need to accurately present your qualifications
and interests in your student profile. Students
who misrepresent their background will be suspended
from the Cardinal Recruiting Program; there will be consequences
and the CDC will report a violation of the Fundamental
Standard
and Honor Code.
I will only sign up for interviews for positions that:
- I am seriously
considering
- I am
qualified for as defined in the job description text
- I
am qualified for as defined in the online requirements (current
degree, current major, graduation date, and
work authorization)
I will use my individual
SUID to set up an account online with the CDC and I will not
let others use my account to sign up for
interviews or submit resumes.

Cancellation
Policy
You may
cancel your interview online until 11:59 p.m. Pacific
Time, five (5) days prior to the interview without penalty.
Canceling
less than five days prior to the interview will be
considered a late cancellation. Rescheduling your Cardinal
Recruiting interview
for an alternate date-location-time outside of the CDC less
than five days prior to the scheduled interview date is still
considered
a late cancellation.
- If you cancel late or fail to show up for
an interview, you must write and send
the employer a letter of apology within one week of the
cancelled interview and send a copy to crstudents@mailman.stanford.edu. Students
who do not write a letter of apology within one week of the cancelled
interview will be suspended from the Cardinal Recruiting program
and removed from all pending interview schedules until the letter
is received by the CDC.
- If
you have a second no-show or late cancellation, you
will be permanently restricted from the Cardinal Recruiting
program for the academic year.

Job
Offer Policy
You are
responsible for notifying organizations of an acceptance
or rejection offer no later than the time mutually agreed upon.
An
accepted offer is a contractual agreement which you
are expected to honor. After accepting an offer, you need to withdraw
from the
interviewing process, notify the Career Development
Center, and other organizations with offers pending.
- Exploding offers
are not allowed. With
such offers, employers put pressure on students, requiring them
to accept an offer within a very limited time period, or they
extend more offers than they have jobs, and then tell students
that offers will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
- In order to give you enough time to make an informed and thoughtful decision,
we require employers to follow these guidelines:
Fall
Quarter: 3 weeks minimum response time, from receipt
of the written offer
Winter Quarter: 3 weeks minimum response
time, from receipt of the written offer
Spring Quarter: 2 weeks minimum response
time, from receipt of the written offer
Summer Quarter: If you are offered full-time
employment at the end of a summer internship, the
decision deadline is November 30th. This allows students
to participate in the fall recruiting
process.

Non-Discrimination
Policy
The CDC
makes its services available to employers who do not unlawfully
discriminate in the selection of employees on the basis of national
origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability,
or any other basis prohibited by applicable law.
Employers
who make use of the University facilities or services must agree
to abide by this policy and, if interviewing students, to act
in good faith with students meeting the employers legitimate
specifications who have signed up for an interview.

GPA and standardized test scores (i.e.
SAT, ACT, GMAT, GRE)
Employers
using Cardinal Recruiting or other CDC services are not
allowed to use GPA or standardized test scores (i.e. SAT, ACT,
GMAT,
GRE) as a screening tool for students trying to obtain
a first-round interview with the company. This is a policy of
Stanford University
and University Counsel.
A minimum grade point
average and/or test scores should not be a prerequisite to getting
an interview
because it often overlooks many other qualities and factors that
create an excellent candidate.
- Employers
cannot mention a GPA or test score minimum in their job descriptions
via our job listing service, Cardinal Recruiting, career fairs,
or any other services our Career Development Center has to offer.
If an employer requests students to submit unofficial transcripts
with a resume, students have the option of editing out the GPA
information.

Testing Policy
University Counsel prohibits
on-campus testing of Stanford students by employers. The CDC
facilities are to be used by employers solely for the purpose
of interviewing students currently enrolled at Stanford. Employers
may make arrangements for testing facilities at nearby hotels.
- Employers that do decide
to conduct tests at nearby hotels are required to follow the
guidelines set forth by the National Association of Colleges
and Employers. Per their guidelines, those engaged in administering,
evaluating, and interpreting assessment tools, tests, and technology
used in the testing process will be trained and qualified to
do so.
- Employment professionals
must advise students in a timely fashion of the type and purpose
of any test that students will
be required to take as part of the recruitment process and
to whom the test results will be disclosed. This information
should
be posted within the context of the job description so that
students are informed at the beginning of the recruitment process.
If you have any questions,
please contact the CDC Employment Services at 650-723-9014 or send
an email to crstudents@mailman.stanford.edu

Searching For Employers And Interview Dates
Once you are activated for Cardinal Recruiting, you can search for:
- All employers who will conduct interviews
• A specific employer's visit
• All employers visiting on a specific date
• Requirements you must meet
• Deadlines to submit your resume and other materials, and sign up dates if selected by the employer
• Presentations - Some employers host an information session prior to the interview. You should attend, especially if you are
being interviewed.

Submitting
your resume to employers
The How To Apply button at the top of the
job listing will be an active link during the resume submission
period only if you meet these four criteria:
• Degree
• Major
• Graduation date range
• Work authorization
The button will not appear
if you are accessing the schedule outside the designated resume
submission dates.
If you meet the requirements,
you may submit your resume and other documents to the employer by
following prompts after clicking the How To Apply button.
If you do not meet the
requirements, the reason why you don't meet the requirements will
be listed on top of your page. DO NOT change
your profile to submit your resume. Changing your profile to submit
your resume is a violation of the recruiting policy and you will
be removed from the Cardinal Recruiting program.

Pre-select Signups
Employers review all resume submissions and select students they
wish to interview. These selections are called "Preselects." Some
employers will also select alternate students who will be given
an opportunity to sign up for interviews after preselected students are
given an initial chance to sign up.
- If chosen as a preselect
or alternate, you will receive a notice in the "alerts" section
on your Cardinal Careers account home page.
- Preselects
have a specified time period in which to sign up for an interview.
After that time period, you lose your guarantee for an interview
slot. You may still sign up during the alternate or open sign-up
periods if open spots are still available.

Open
sign-ups
Open sign-ups give you a chance to sign
up for an interview on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Companies
which only use the preselect/alternate sign-ups will switch
to open sign-ups five days prior to the interview date if there
are
open interview slots.
- All schedules close
five (5) days prior to the interview date.

Missing
resume submissions
If you
miss a resume submission deadline and meet all the employer requirements,
you may choose to email or fax your resume directly
to the employer with
a cover letter
explaining
your situation.
- You should send your email before the employer
makes his/her preselections.
- If you do not hear from the employer,
check the "Interview" section of your Cardinal
Careers account to see if you were chosen as a preselect or alternate
for an interview.

Changing
your interview time
You can
change your interview time on line up to the date the schedule closes from your Cardinal Careers
account.
- Click the "Interviews" button.
- Click the tab "Scheduled Interviews." Any
open interview times will be listed.
- Changes must be completed
in a timely manner before the schedule closes for sign
ups.
- The CDC will not make changes over the phone or release
the names of students on schedules.

Interview
rounds
Employers have certain
constraints in the amount of flexibility they have to accommodate
student needs, but we ask that they
support you in upholding your prior commitments to academics
and other previously scheduled interviews.
- Second round
interviews should not be scheduled prior to the fifth day
following the initial interview.
- Let employers
about about
any prior commitments you have. Employers should not eliminate you
from the pool
of second round candidates should you be unable to meet on the
first requested date.
- Employers should provide alternative options
to
students who cannot meet on the first scheduling attempt.

Cancelling
a scheduled interview
While logged into Cardinal
Careers, click the "Interviews" button,
then the "Scheduled
Interviews" tab. You will see a list
of your interviews. Click the "Decline" button
next to the interview slot you wish to cancel.
- You will not be able
to cancel on-line if the interview is less than five (5) days
away. Please reference
the above cancellation policy. If this happens, please contact Employment
Services at 650-723-9014 or by emailing crstudents@mailman.stanford.edu as
soon as possible and let us know your name, which company you are
interviewing with and date/time of the interview and the reason for
the cancellation.
- A letter of apology is still required.

Interview
preparation tips
Make sure you know the time and location
of your interview. Most, but not all, interviews take place at
the Career Development
Center.
- Go over your notes about the company.
- Make a copy of your resume in case the interviewer forgets to bring your
resume.
- Arrive 15 minutes early for your interview and try to relax.
- Check off your name on the bulletin board with the interview schedules.
- Have a seat and wait for the interviewer to call your name.
- If the interviewer is more than ten minutes late, check with the receptionist.

Greeters/Coordinators
Some employers
bring a greeter or recruiting coordinator to the interviews.
- Prior
to your interview, you might be welcomed by a company representative
who preps you for your upcoming
interview.
- This
representative may ask you some basic background questions
and have you fill out application forms that are necessary
if and when you are extended an offer.
- You
may be asked to sign a form that indicates you are aware
of their hiring policies.
